Hiya peeps, new to the site so HUGE hello to everyone. Found the site when looking for protien shakes. I had an eight year break but have been back training for just over a year now - 16stone and very little fat (5ft 10"). Not bad for a 44 year old. But I have hit a size plataue which I am trying to train out using all of my old tricks - super setting, light and heavy, change, rest repeat, alsorts. But have a few chemical type questions that might help. Whey protien or egg and milk protien powders?? NOS, NOX, which and yes or no?? Glutamine?? Extra aminos in tab form?? Sooner have your experiances than suposition but any advice really welcome, I can supply the hard work but when it comes to nutrition would sooner spend my dosh and get results, than try and fail. Cheers
I currently using eggwhite powder with milk, Protein powder has been the same as any for me. Plus taste better with milk. Never used any arginine products that gave me a better muscle pump than a £2.99 bottle of vanadyl sulphate from holland&barrats it recommended to take 1 tab daily but im currently taking 2. Glutamine is a must id say, its a allrounder muscle builder. Liquid aminos seems to work better for me than the tabs. Whats your diet like???
Supplements are a waste of money!!!! you know the magazines they are advertised in? they are owned by the supplement companies. all you need to do is make sure you get good quality Protein 6 times a day, carbs and some EFA's All the top bodybuilders who endorse them are paid to do so, they get that big from steroids, growth hormone, IGF1 and insulin NOT from using the supplements they endorse.
Take your point about the money making, but there are cheap protien powders (precision engineering) out there which seem a good way of getting protien quick. What are EFA's? If I went doen the no or little suppliments whats the best - egg whites?, chicken?, skimmed milk? enquiring minds need to know??
EFA's Essential fatty acids example cod ;iver oil omega3,6,9. Egg whites is the purest form of protein you can get. Even the egg yolks are good for you to an extent. They also have chlosterol in so best not to have to many. Chicken my favourite part of my diet very good for you. Milk has alot of calories but it is good source of protein+minerals.
Diet is key, the mainstray of your diet should be quality whole food meals. As for supplements - stick with the basics. People may have differing views on this but I find supplements help me a great deal. I find it difficult to eat all my protein form whole food and also for most balancing meals with work etc is tough too - shakes come in handy. If you can eat 4 solid meals and 2 shakes then you are there. After training (pwo) is a key time to consume a quick digesting protein shake along wioth some simple carbs. The basic supps I would recommend using are:
High quality protein powder Full spectrum Muliti vitamin/mineral supplement Some form of creatine
Those are just the basics, stick with these and you will get value for money and great results providing the rest of your diet is good.

I find it difficult to eat all my protein from whole food
I entirely agree here. As it is I have to eat when I'm not hungry just to keep the necessary vitamins going. I dieted for 12 months to lose 4 stones and I think my stomach shrunk. I take 3 helping of whey protein shake each day, each helping of 50mgs. One of these is IMMEDIATELY and I mean IMMEDIATELY after work outs. I find the strawberry flavours especially tasty. Funny enough my wife tried one once and pronounced it "very nice"! I also take creatine at breakfast, If you have time have a look at this discussion about it. http://www.abc.net.au/rn/talks/bbing/stories/s98916.htm
