If you always have a thirst, better get checked for diabetes. Simple blood test.  My wife has diabetes and it can be controlled simply by diet.

Ben, this is not necessary. Only some symptoms need appear. For example my wife had no symptoms at all and it was only discovered when she went for a blood test for a totally different reason! Got a bit of a shock, I can tell you!

One cause is the use of steroids!  This is about the thirst problem:-

# Excessive thirst (polydipsia): A person with diabetes develops high blood sugar levels. The body tries to counteract this by sending a signal to the brain to dilute the blood, which translates into thirst. The body encourages more water consumption to dilute the high blood sugar back to normal levels and to compensate for the water lost by excessive urination.

# Excessive urination (polyuria): Another way the body tries to get rid of the extra sugar in the blood is to excrete it in the urine. This can also lead to dehydration because excreting the sugar carries a large amount of water out of the body along with it.

# Excessive eating (polyphagia): If the body is able, it will secrete more insulin in order to try to deal with the excessive blood sugar levels. Also the body is resistant to the action of insulin in type 2 diabetes. One of the functions of insulin is to stimulate hunger. Therefore, higher insulin levels lead to increased hunger and eating. Despite increased caloric intake, the person may gain very little weight and may even lose weight.

Bigben - you drink around 6-7 litres a day of different fluids - what is it that you mainly drink?

does your tea and coffee contain milk ?? and what type do you use. (milk)

Water is important in itself :

One of the main jobs of the liver is to
convert stored fat into energy. That's a
good thing.

But your liver also helps out the kidneys
when they are having some trouble.

And when you are not drinking enough water,
your kidneys need a hand, so your liver
helps out.

But now, your liver is taking away it's
focus on turning your fat into energy
and... well, you see where I am going with
this one.

It makes you fatter. Period.

You might have tried to drink more
water before and felt yourself going to
the loo non-stop.

That's only temporary and it's actually a
good thing. It's your cells releasing all the
excess water in your body.

Soon, it will slow down as you body beings
to realize it will continue to get more
water.

So you could try :-

A cup of water for every 15 pounds of
bodyweight. It's not a magic formula,
but I found it works well.

And just as important, have a big glass of
water first thing when you wake up. You get
dehydrated when you are sleeping, so it's
the perfect way to rehydrate right away.

A litre is 2.2 pints, so they must be VERY big cups.  Bigben, possibly you're not really drinking as much liquid as you think.
