Posted by: Rottee, July 1, 2007, 5:39pm
I asked the question of do I rest between each set of reps and am no further to finding out.
On my routine it says bench press 4 sets 15 12 10 8 do I just rest between each set and if so how long and if not why dont I just push out 45?

because you cant humanly push 45 reps at a heavy weight
you rest for 1-2mins depending on your self.
Goal is to lift heavy//not light to be able to lift x45 reps hehe..
REPLY to this.. dont post a new topic again lol. you keep making new topics blubbing up the forum dude

Rottee,
Sorry for the late reply, im a busy boy working 10am until 7pm in my shop 6 days a week, i need the weekends off (sunday) to catch up on my own personal bits and pieces, plus i dont get paid to help out... i do it for FREE!
The idea is to increase the weight each set and this places more stress on muscle tissue with every set. 20 reps would be your warm up weight then increase the weight again until no more then 15 reps can be accomplished, then 12 and so on...
Inbetween sets i prefer to rest 30 secs for the first two then 60 secs then 90 if im doing 4 sets.
As you get heavier you will find yourself out of breath more and this is enough time for me to catch my breath to give it 100% on each set, although 100% intensity is used only on the last two sets becouse the other sets are served as warm ups.
Hope this helped Rottee 8)

If you have a training partner then its one off, one on ! When he/she is done with the set its your turn. No faffing around. There are a number of ways to increase intensity and one of them is to keep the rest time to a minimum. But then you will find, until you get used to it,that your strength will appear to decrease as your recovery time is shortened. As you get used to this and your muscles get stronger and adapt to the increased intensity you will find your strength increasing even with shorter rest periods.
It takes time for the body to adjust, so don't be despondant if you feel your strength isn't what it should be when you first do this.
