You need a reliable machine which you always use. They are generally quite flawed so be careful about what they say. Time of day, different machines, washing your hands and hydration all make a massive difference to your reading and accuracy can be as poor as +/- 15%!!!  Having said that, if you get a good pair of scales (maybe £50) with body fat measurement on it you can start to measure daily or weekly and get a sense for what you are losing.

Alternatively you can get a trained instructor to do the pinch test where they take folds of skin in precise areas of the body and measure the thickness (this works out how much subcutaneous fat you have) and then creates a total bf %. This is still prone to error and relies upon followign the procedure correctly.

Lastly and probably most accurate are the flotation tanks with weights. It's a complicated affair and I have yet to find anywhere that has that facility.

If I were you I would try and work on lowering your bf percentage (unless it's already very low) and use a bf monitor to show the drop rather than the actual %.

Does that make sense.

As it happens, I have dropped 14% to around 10% in the past 3 months. Doing ok!

I wouldnt get too hooked up on bodyfat percentages, especially if your after mass.  I know mine is over 10% but that doesnt concern me at this point in time. Get big... then get cut when you have some mass to show!  :P
