Just after a little bit of help if you dont mind.
Things have changed a bit.
When doing a bulk to gain muscle mass what cardio should you do. Have done a fair
bit of reading on this today. Some say none, some say 1-3 days, is pretty varied.
HIIT or steady state and how long. ???????

I always to cardio when bulking, it helps you get more nutrients into your body without adding plenty of fat, also you should to it to keep your fitness up, i will either do 20 mins after each workout or three 40 mins sessions during the week, at the moment i am doing 25 mins before break every day and 45 mins every night after training but thats because i am dieting

Cardio is recommended all year long. Not that I do the recommended ! I always do it pre comp', but I stay quite lean
naturally . Its the putting on mass I have trouble with so I don't do much off season. Just when I feel like it.
Kes is quite right in what he says, his is good advice.

cardio should always be done. Personally i do cardio to train cardio system and keep heart rate between 75-85 % of max not a low heart rate fat burn as some do. Train your cardio vascular system helps with alot of health problems that guys encounter when ON, a fit system is a good one in my book. Hard F**ing work at time and boring as bollocks unless there is a good flick on the tv (if there is a tv).

Ta Romp's..........lol.
I am going to start doing cardio, but having discussed it with a very knowledgable friend of mine he has suggested
the following, reasons explained.
Do 1 minute of hi impact/intensity cardio, break for a minute, repeat, and do so for 10 one minute sessions, all high
impact/high intensity. Apparently doing longer, lower impact sessions raises cortisol levels dramatically, something a
bodybuilder does not want. Doing the short high impact sessions does not result in the same raise in cortisol and also has better fat burning potential. Its all theorectical and as I have not yet started it myself I cannot prove what I am
saying here, but its an alternative worthy of a dabble.
I'll keep you posted.

Reaper, fascinated with this thread but what do you mean by "hi impact/intensity cardio"? I do all my cardio on the treadmill or cross-trainer.

Madeira Jon,
Usually cardio is kept to a low/moderate impact session, not getting your heart rate above 120ish, however the idea
with this is to get your heart pounding, so an ideal option would be to use a punch bag or similar. Generate intensity. Which you can also do on a cross trainer, as you would know.

Thanks for that, I've got a very slow pulse, normally at 60 and after "power walking" on the treadmill it still only rises to 120 and I'm SWEATING!!!! :)

Cardio was never something i did like i say when bulking up and what is right for 1 is not always right for another, Walking i suppose was always a big thing i did walk for miles with the dog so you could say that was sort of cardio lol i did used to box before bodybuilding and as ya know the training is hard work so maybe it was because i could not be arsed doing that any more who knows but always did it on a cutting phase and it always worked. after training for a lot of years i never really saw cardio being done by the monsters in the gym either until they where ready to get copetition ready.

I have done this before high intensity for short bursts short rests , it will really elevate your heart rate and unless you have a really quick recovery rate you heart rate will still be very elevated when the next min of intensity starts. If very high intensity your heart rate shoots up and your heart rate will be above 120 (unless super cardio fit) allot of the time doing this, including rest periods.
